Bailey Orthodontics specializes in custom smile makeovers with aesthetic gingival contouring. If your gums are resting too low or high on your teeth, gingival contouring can help. Often referred to as gum reshaping, aesthetic gingival contouring is designed to smooth out an uneven gum line and help you obtain the smile you’ve always wanted!
What Is Aesthetic Gingival Contouring?
There are several reasons why the gums can appear too low or too high. If you’ve had dental problems over the years and have dealt with root canals and crowns, it’s common for the gums to start receding, leading to uneven gums. Genetics are often to blame for gums that make teeth look too small or too large. Prescription medications can also lead to gum problems that require gingival contouring.
Gum recession occurs as a natural part of the aging process. Gum recession can make teeth look too large as the gums begin to pull back from the teeth. Patients dealing with gum recession need to contact our office as it can lead to serious problems like tooth decay, and potentially tooth loss. Periodontal diseases of this nature can be challenging to face as they can continue worsening until there is a deterioration of the gums and jaw bone.
How Does Gum Contouring Work?
Gum contouring focuses on shaping the gums to enhance the appearance of your smile. We add gum tissue when recession has occurred or we can trim the overgrown gum tissue that is causing the teeth to look too short. Following an initial consultation, Dr. Bailey will create a personalized treatment plan to determine the best option to enhance your smile. Through the use of lasers we will perform the gum contouring procedure as needed. Certain patients may need follow-up treatments to obtain desired results.
What to Expect
When you visit our office, we will discuss the procedure, apply an anesthetic to the treatment area, and perform the procedure. Our orthodontists use lasers for the procedure because there is very minimal discomfort especially compared to procedures that use scalpels. Patients will receive post-care instructions to reduce concerns related to infections and pain. Within a few days or weeks, the gums will start to heal and stay in their new position.
