What is a Palatal Expander?
A palatal expander is used to expand the space of the roof of the mouth. The expander is mostly recommended when there is not enough space for the teeth to grow properly and is custom made for your child. This can ensure that there is adequate space for teeth to grow in. It is most effectively used between the ages of 7 and 8 years old. The jaw will still be growing and adjusting at this point, allowing it to be moved fairly easily. The expander will need to be worn for a few months after the desired levels of expansion have been achieved.
Benefits of a Palatal Expander
Expanding the palate at a young age can help prevent future problems. It can also help reduce the amount of time needed for future orthodontic treatments. It can help prevent airway obstruction, which can lead to many problems. These problems include sleep apnea, breathing troubles, and many other issues.
What to Expect
There are a few things that will likely occur after first receiving the expander. A lisp, excess saliva, problems swallowing, a slight headache, and pressure are particularly common after receiving the palatal expander. These symptoms are only temporary and should go away in time. Adjusting your palatal expander shouldn’t cause pain. If you feel pain or discomfort, you should contact our office.
How to Adjust the Expander
The frequency of expander adjustments should be done only according to your orthodontist’s instructions. To adjust the expander, you will need to insert the key piece into the hole in the middle front part of the palatal expander. You should feel some resistance as you steadily push the key from the front toward the back of the mouth. The next hole should rotate into position as you do so. The key can then be removed by pushing it toward the throat and out of the hole.
